حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِىٍّ الْحُلْوَانِىُّ أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ أَخْبَرَنَا مَعْمَرٌ عَنِ الزُّهْرِىِّ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِى أَنَسُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم صَلَّى الظُّهْرَ حِينَ زَالَتِ الشَّمْسُ. قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ صَحِيحٌ. وَهُوَ أَحْسَنُ حَدِيثٍ فِى هَذَا الْبَابِ. وَفِى الْبَابِ عَنْ جَابِرٍ.

حَدَّثَنَا مَحْمُودُ بْنُ غَيْلاَنَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ الطَّيَالِسِىُّ قَالَ أَنْبَأَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ مُهَاجِرٍ أَبِى الْحَسَنِ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ وَهْبٍ عَنْ أَبِى ذَرٍّ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم كَانَ فِى سَفَرٍ وَمَعَهُ بِلاَلٌ فَأَرَادَ بِلاَلٌ أَنْ يُقِيمَ فَقَالَ أَبْرِدْ. ثُمَّ أَرَادَ أَنْ يُقِيمَ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم أَبْرِدْ فِى الظُّهْرِ. قَالَ حَتَّى رَأَيْنَا فَىْءَ التُّلُولِ ثُمَّ أَقَامَ فَصَلَّى فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم إِنَّ شِدَّةَ الْحَرِّمِنْ فَيْحِ جَهَنَّمَ فَأَبْرِدُوا عَنِ الصَّلاَةِ. قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ.
The Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, was traveling in the company of Bilal[1]. Bilal wanted to perform the call to prayer, so the Messenger of God said, "Wait until it becomes cooler." A while later, he wanted to perform the call to prayer, and the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said, "Wait until it becomes cooler to perform the noon prayer (2)." He said, "We waited until we saw the shadow of the hills (which implies that the main heat of noon had subsided)." Then Bilal performed the call to prayer and he (The Prophet) prayed. The Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said, 'Indeed, the intensity of heat is from the exhalation of Hell, so delay the noon prayer until it becomes cooler.'" (1) Bilal: One of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of God be upon him) and the first Mu'athen in Islam (the one who performs the call to prayers). حَدَّثَنَا عَلِىُّ بْنُ حُجْرٍ حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ عَنِ الْعَلاَءِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ أَنَّهُ دَخَلَ عَلَى أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ فِى دَارِهِ بِالْبَصْرَةِ حِينَ انْصَرَفَ مِنَ الظُّهْرِ وَدَارُهُ بِجَنْبِ الْمَسْجِدِ فَقَالَ قُومُوا فَصَلُّوا الْعَصْرَ. قَالَ فَقُمْنَا فَصَلَّيْنَا فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفْنَا قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقُولُ تِلْكَ صَلاَةُ الْمُنَافِقِ يَجْلِسُ يَرْقُبُ الشَّمْسَ حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَتْ بَيْنَ قَرْنَىِ الشَّيْطَانِ قَامَ فَنَقَرَ أَرْبَعًا لاَ يَذْكُرُ اللَّهَ فِيهَا إِلاَّ قَلِيلاً. قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ.
[Anas Ibn-Mālik said] I heard the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, say, "That is the prayer of the hypocrite: he sits and waits for the sun to be between the two horns of Satan (1) to get up and peck [the ground] four times (i.e. performs quick prostrations in four units of prayer, resembling a bird pecking at the ground) hardly evoking God (2)." (3) Footnotes: (1) The time just before the sunset: the time in which the polytheists prostrate to the sun and therefore the reference "horns of Satan" represents a time when Satan has power over them. (2 Evoking God: A devotional practice that focuses on feeling God’s presence in the different facets of life. It includes several kinds like practical evoking (obeying God’s commandments), verbal evoking (supplications, praising, glorifying and exalting God), and evoking by the heart (meditation). (3) i.e. The hypocrite delays the afternoon prayer (the third prescribed prayer of the day) until the very last minutes, then performs it quickly, just before the time of the sunset. حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ وَهْبٍ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْجُهَنِىِّ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عُمَرَ بْنِ عَلِىِّ بْنِ أَبِى طَالِبٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عَنْ عَلِىِّ بْنِ أَبِى طَالِبٍ أَنَّ النَّبِىَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ لَهُ يَا عَلِىُّ ثَلاَثٌ لاَ تُؤَخِّرْهَا الصَّلاَةُ إِذَا آنَتْ وَالْجَنَازَةُ إِذَا حَضَرَتْ وَالأَيِّمُ إِذَا وَجَدْتَ لَهَا كُفْؤًا. قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ غَرِيبٌ حَسَنٌ.
The Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said, "Aliy! three [things] you should not delay: the prayer when it is due, the funeral [prayer] when it (the enshrouded body) arrives, and [the marriage of] a single woman when you find her a suitable match(1)." حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ حَدَّثَنَا مَرْوَانُ بْنُ مُعَاوِيَةَ الْفَزَارِىُّ عَنْ أَبِى يَعْفُورٍ عَنِ الْوَليِدِ بْنِ الْعَيْزَارِ عَنْ أَبِى عَمْرٍو الشَّيْبَانِىِّ أَنَّ رَجُلاً قَالَ لاِبْنِ مَسْعُودٍ أَىُّ الْعَمَلِ أَفْضَلُ قَالَ سَأَلْتُ عَنْهُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَقَالَ الصَّلاَةُ عَلَى مَوَاقِيتِهَا. قُلْتُ وَمَاذَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ وَبِرُّ الْوَالِدَيْنِ. قُلْتُ وَمَاذَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ وَالْجِهَادُ فِى سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ. قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى وَهَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ. وَقَدْ رَوَى الْمَسْعُودِىُّ وَشُعْبَةُ وَسُلَيْمَانُ هُوَ أَبُو إِسْحَاقَ الشَّيْبَانِىُّ وَغَيْرُ وَاحِدٍ عَنِ الْوَلِيدِ بْنِ الْعَيْزَارِ هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ.
A man asked Ibn-Mas'ūd, "Which of the deeds is the most virtuous?" He replied, "I asked the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, about that, and he replied, '[Observing] the prayer at its [appointed] time.' I asked, 'And what else, Messenger of God?' He replied, 'And being dutiful to one's parents.' I asked, 'And what else, Messenger of God?' He said, 'and jihād (striving) in the way of God (1).'" Footnote (1): Jihād is defined as any earnest striving for the sake of God, involving personal, physical, intellectual or military effort, for righteousness and against wrong-doing. In such fighting, no woman, child or innocent civilian may be harmed, nor a tree cut down. Islām calls for moderation and tolerance, and abhors extremism, terrorism, oppression and discrimination.
